A short film about Laura, who gets seduced by Instagrams apparent social recognition. With help from her experienced blogger cousin Alexandra, she goes on a photoshoot in public. However, she must soon face the rules of the insta game and realize how much it will cause her to compromise her own vision and ideas. Insta worthy tells the story of how hard it is to be yourself, when trying to fit in to the expectations of others.
Comparison leads to pain
The thoughts behind the film came from an experience I had, where my my girlfriend at the time repeatedly would be in a really bad mood after having spent time on Instagram. And it was times, where we were cozy and everything else was really good. But she weren’t happy.
I wanted to make a film, that dealt with the urge to compare yourself to others. Because the way I see it, it will almost only lead you to self hatred and critique.
Instead of writing a fleshed out script, I wrote a treatment that I presented to the actors. They then put a lot of their own knowledge and experiences into the scenes. A lot of great pieces of dialogue from the film is theirs. Even the title came from one of the improvised scenes.
Visually I tried to create an unforgiving and distanced view at the events. I worked with awkward framings to try to show how Laura doesn’t fit into this world.
It was a playground for a film language that I hope to dig deeper into someday and revisit.
